Portland Pro Makeup Artists gather for MAC Pro Master Class

HD and the extreme detailed zoom-in capabilities of cameras changed everything for makeup artists.  Product choices and techniques need to be revamped to make skin look gorgeous and fresh in the age of the extreme close up.  Portland’s professional makeup artists gathered at the NW 23rd MAC store to learn about this very topic from MAC Senior Artist Caitlin Callahan in her Close Up Makeup Master Class.

Caitlin C. rocked our world and busted us out of old ruts by demonstrating a myriad of techniques.  Gone are the days of covering the entire face in foundation (I wanted to stand up and shout ‘Amen!’ at this one), covering the entire under eye with concealer, setting with powder (what?  I know!), lining the entire lip, using one lip color for the whole lip, stopping that brow bone shadow at the edge of the eyebrow.  The amazing list goes on and on.

Basically it’s all about TEXTURE!  Here are many of the products used to create that flawless and fresh look.  Some of the products I picked up afterwards were MAC Oil Control Lotion, more Mineralize Skinfinish Natural powders, Pro Longwear Concealer, Clear Brow Set, and Prep + Prime highlighter pens.

Caitlin is so generous with her knowledge, fielding all of our questions with humor and enthusiasm while working on her model.

Hometown Makeovers Debut

Many times I’ve thought how fun it would be to do makeup in my little hometown and last week I finally did just that!

Cassandra Kennedy Beauty Hometown Makeovers

Way out in the mountains of Eastern Oregon you’ll find the place I grew up: Halfway.  It was once just a stagecoach mail drop halfway between two old mining towns.

There’s the cutest little addition to Main Street now.  Stephanie’s Bakery!  When I lived there, Stephanie was just a toddler.

Stephanie

Now she’s all grown up.  For her makeover I decided to bring out the  bombshell but keep the makeup pretty enough for daytime.

She also cajoled her sister (who would rather be out riding horses than fussing with makeup) into joining us.  I found out that scented hair products also give her migraines.  No worries, I just added a little bend to the hair with a curling iron.  A smile of relief washed over her when she looked in the mirror.  ”You didn’t put a ton of makeup on me!”  Sometimes when you’re sitting there and you feel all these brushes and sponges brushing against your face, you have to wonder.

These two ladies are very dear to my heart and I’ve known them both my entire life.  It was such a treat to catch up with them and talk about their beauty routines.  My biggest advice to them was to keep the skin moist looking.  It’s especially important in dry climates like Halfway.  That means possibly switching to a foundation that is more of a tinted moisturizer or beauty balm and ditching the powder.  Cream blush instead of powder blush too!

I also got to work with another set of sisters!  These two high schoolers gave me updates on important stuff like who are the cutest boys in the school, who is going to prom with whom, etc.  In a small school there aren’t many people so you just end up rotating boyfriends amongst your friends.  I told the story of a boy who went out with every single one of my girlfriends over the course of six years.  She giggled and said “Um, he’s our softball coach.”  LOL!  So the 18-year-old wanted smoky eyes and tousled waves a la Kardashian style.  I just happened to have three of Kim’s favorite go-to products in my kit!

I told the 16-year-old that her skin would never be this great again so don’t cover it up with a bunch of heavy makeup!  Also brown-eyed girls are lucky because they can wear almost any eye color and it looks great.  She opted for the same liner I loved at that age – electric blue!

A big thank you to all who came out for some beauty fun and an extra big thank you to Stephanie’s Bakery and Wildflowers Again for hosting me!  Let’s do it again soon – that was fun:)

Oscars 2012 Red Carpet Beauty Trends

The votes are in and the clear beauty trend of the 2012 Annual Academy Awards red carpet was red lips in all its variations!  Even several of the spouses and interviewers (like my favorite Giuliana Rancic) wore red lips.

I loved so many of these looks, especially Milla Jovovich’s!  Great movement in her hair and a nice combination of pretty and dramatic on her makeup.   Other favorites were smokey-eyed beauties Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz pairing their dramatic eyes with nude lips.

Funny girls Kristen Wiig and Tina Fey really looked their best on the hair and makeup front.

I thought Glenn Close looked the best she’s ever looked!  I also cheered when I saw Viola Davis showing off her natural hair.  Yeah!  Looking Good ladies…and talk about talent. Wow.

Nuptials of a Fashion Girl

So fashion-y! That’s what I thought when I saw the gorgeous vibrant navy bridesmaids dresses at this wedding.  This was certainly to be expected from Cheryl who was working for an uber famous fashion designer.  The evening we first met she and her bff (third from left) had just come from work and they were still in the mode.  I remember them talking to each other about people in creative fields who “either get it or they don’t.” I had to agree.  There’s only so much that can be taught and then you have to just have a natural sense of things.

I quickly discovered she’s the type that knows exactly what she likes.  No bronzer (rare!), a barely discernible touch of foundation, light sheer pink lips, and a somewhat dramatic eye.  The chignon should be slightly off center, slightly messy yet put together, with some height in the back and some cool angles on the side.

I was so happy when the two deemed me as “someone who gets it.”  Yay, what better award is there than that?!

I ended up having the best evening with those two girls.  So entertaining!  The morning of the wedding her skin was aglow and she had butterflies in her stomach.  To her surprise, her fashion designer boss sent a huge bouquet of white calla lilies to the room where we were getting ready with a congratulatory note.  We all marveled at their beauty, took a few deep breaths and then began our own beauty process.  I love how her skin looks in these images.  I learned a long time ago it’s best not to cover up skin that looks this good.

Lovely veil, mischievous smiling bride, cute tough guy scowl.

The bridesmaids all opted for varying levels of neutral colored makeup so as not to compete with the blue.  It was a pleasure (as always) to work with the wonderful Erika Franko that day who did many of the bridesmaids’ hair and makeup.  Thank you to David Nicholas for sharing these images with us.

Cheryl, I wish you nothing but the best.  Until we meet again dahling!

A Big Hair Story

She’s the kind of bride that doesn’t mind hoofing it around the city in converse shoes on her wedding day: low maintenance!

And thank goodness for me that she was because what happened at her hair and makeup trial was legendary!  She had requested loose waves with some volume on top.  ”I don’t want the hair just flat against my head” she said.  ”No problem!” I assured her.  I had really become a master at creating lasting volume at the roots.  I worked away on it applying several products to her thin straight hair.  When I took the pin curls out, the volume had grown into what could only be described as “big hair.”  We were shocked and fascinated and a little horrified.  ”Oh my god, I didn’t think my hair could DO that.”  ”Don’t worry,” I said.  ”It’s easy to take this volume down.”  I tried combing it out, applying some products and all my usual tricks but the hair just sprang back up.  I started to sweat.  Nothing was working!

bride having her makeup done

I had to tell her I just couldn’t get the volume out without washing it and starting over.  All the combing had turned it into a helmet of sorts. We marveled at it and noted it was very Dynasty / Dallas era.  She joked “I think I know who shot J.R.!”.  I promised her it would not be like that on the wedding day and she said three wonderful words to me: I trust you.  She loved what I had done for her friend Jenna’s wedding.  So despite the helmet debacle, I got the job anyways.  YAY!!!  She looked so lovely and her hair turned out just how she wanted it.  Whew!

As I was leaving the wedding she slipped me this card that made me laugh out loud when I read it.  ”…And although I’m disappointed to have to give up my career as a Dynasty / Dallas extra, I’m willing to make that sacrifice.”  Love it.  Good luck Meredith and Todd.  I am totally going to take you up on that cocktail one day! xxxooo

My Top Beauty Products of 2011

My top Beauty Product picks for 2011 are:

TOP MAKEUP PRODUCT: Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint

TOP HAIR PRODUCT: Bumble and Bumble’s Texture hair (un)dressing creme

TOP SKIN PRODUCT: PCA Skin C-Strength 20% with 5% Vitamin E

TOP BODY PRODUCT: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 30

TOP BEAUTY TIP: Bold Lippie!

Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint swatches

Bumble & Bumble texture, PCA Skin C-Strength, Neutragena Ultra Sheer

My hands down favorite TOP MAKEUP PRODUCT of the year is Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint.  It’s oil-free, hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, water resistant, SPF 20, but best of all it gives the skin that elusive luminous glow and takes off at least 5 years to your face!  When I received a sample I thought “Ugh, who wants a completely shimmery face?” and then I tried a dab of the Pearl color on my cheek.  Oooh, surprisingly good coverage for a tinted moisturizer and it gives off a really soft and subtle reflection.  No little sparkles.  I put it all over my entire face (DO NOT DO THIS!) and it looked way too shiny.  Then I tried my usual foundation in the t-zone and this on the rest of my face and it looked phenomenal.  I took my little sample on vacation and tried it on two different ladies during impromptu makeovers.  They both oooh’d and aaaah’d and demanded to know what was in the little brown tube.  I smiled like I had beat them to the punch when Allure gave it a Best of Beauty award.  I know you’re thinking the last thing you have time for is to put two foundations on, but you gotta trust me on this one!  You can buy a both either a sample size or full size at b~glowing (a Portland-based biz!) or a full size one from the place I got my original sample, Birchbox.

My selection for  TOP HAIR PRODUCT of the year is Bumble and Bumble’s Texture hair (un)dressing creme.  The main struggle I and many of my clients have is with lack of interesting texture.  My hair is thin and straight and so I’m always trying to find something to fatten it up and give it some grip or a tousled piece-y quality.  I don’t ever expect those products to also give me volume – it’s like that would be asking too much of something.  When I read the description for this, I was skeptical but it delivered on every aspect.  It also holds curls and waves exceptionally well without being stiff.  The finish on this is matte so if you like shiny hair this may not be for you.  Sign up for Bumble and Bumble emails because they often have free samples and travel sizes of their products (including this one) as well as handy little video tutorials.

I chose  PCA Skin C-Strength 20% with 5% Vitamin E for my TOP SKIN PRODUCT of 2011. This is a super powered Vitamin C serum that minimizes fine lines and wrinkles and SERIOUSLY brightens and evens out skin tone.   My friend and Beauty guru Joanne McDonough of Joya Beauty turned me on to this.  She has amazing glowing celebrity dermatologist kind of skin – the kind that makes you demand a recommendation so that you can get the same kind of fabulousness.  She sent me this and after some initial tingling I slept on it and saw an immediate difference the next day.  I sent her a facebook message asking why it worked so fast and she wrote back “The PCA products are very concentrated. That cream has a lot of ascorbic acid which is a lightner, brighter and tightner. Then the Vit. E combo is great for skin repair and the growth of new baby cells.”  This is a great addition to your skincare repertoire.

My uber favorite TOP BODY PRODUCT of the year is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 30.  If there was a Nobel Prize for beauty, I would give it to the person who invented this.  I’m not even kidding.  It’s winter now, but think back to those muggy hot summer days where the humidity would just hang in the air.  The sun’s rays are pounding down on you and the last thing you want to do is lather up with some kind of lotion or cream.  Even the oil free ones and the new liquid sunscreens (and I have really tried them all) feel a little too moist (and ultimately sticky) on the skin.  Plus, you don’t really have the time to slather up, right?  This product was such a life saver for me.  Just spray all over (even the hard to reach back shoulders), wait 5 seconds, and go.  Best of all, YOU DON”T FEEL ANYTHING on the skin.  It’s dry and not sticky at all.  Bonus: it’s oil free and water resistant.  I went through three cans over the summer and never got burned once.   Please note that the other SPF versions of this product and the cool touch versions do NOT feel the same – they are slightly stickier.  SPF 30 is the BEST!!!

My TOP BEAUTY TIP of the year  is to go ahead and have the guts to try a bold lipstick color.  C’mon, everyone’s doing it!  Lipstick is back in a major way!  Here’s my challenge: Pick one that you’d normally never wear in real life but the color is very attractive to you (fuschia? cherry red? black plum?), buy it, and then wear it just once to some kind of event.  Keep the makeup light so the lips are the focus of your look.  I am the queen of nude and sheer gold glosses and that’s all I typically wear.  When I saw all of the bright orange lips on the runways, I felt excited and I admired them from afar but didn’t have the courage to do it myself.  Finally I decided to go for it and  I got so many compliments and people asking what brand it was (Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense).  I noticed with myself and my brides that bolder lip colors really photograph well.  I’m now wearing them more often and it is really fun.  Give it a try!

Cheers to a beautiful 2012…

Kate Moss: Bridal Beauty of the Year 2011

I woke up at 3AM to watch Kate Middleton marry Prince William and I was proud of Kate for staying true to her own style.  She looked radiant and happy and was pretty much a shoo-in for any Bride of the Year award. Then the September issue of Vogue arrived in all of its 600+ page goodness and I was treated to the most beautiful wedding party style I’d ever seen.  Kate Moss’s Gatsby-era English countryside wedding was my kind of fairytale.  Just look at this portrait by Mario Testino.  The girls’ rumpled waves, the garlands, the creamy color palette, the glowing faces…HEART!

I loved the relaxed texture of the waves in her hair and the simplicity of her makeup.

Kate Mossclose-up of Kate Moss

Of course the pièce de résistance besides Kate herself was the one-of-a-kind embroidered chiffon bridal gown by long-time friend John Galliano, for which he received a standing ovation from the guests after her father thanked him for making it in a speech.

Thank you Vogue for the eye candy!

Best of Celebrity Beauty 2011

I have always been obsessed with celebrity beauty.  I love watching award shows just to see who’s wearing what and then reading the recaps later in magazines.  There is usually one stand-out look each year that blows me a away at first sight.

BEST MAKEUP: This year it was Emma Stone’s red carpet appearance at the Golden Globes in a simple floor-length peach colored Calvin Klein dress with coordinating pretty peachy pink makeup that had me swooning.  Red carpet makeup is tricky.  You have to really amp it up so that it shows up on camera but it often looks way overdone when you zoom in.  This looks very fresh with a touch of drama and was a breath of fresh air on the smoky eye-filled awards circuit.  Her makeup artist used all mark. makeup – the super inexpensive subsidiary of Avon for the younger crowd.  It just goes to show you that you don’t need high end cosmetics to look fabulous.

BEST HAIRSTYLE: Diane Kruger had a great year in hair.  Several of her updos and old hollywood styles were outstanding but this is my favorite.  The softer modern take on finger waves combined with the side chignon and vintage hair jewelry…simply gorg!

Diane Kruger finger waves updo

BEST HAIRCUT:  I can feel hairdressers everywhere groaning as I type this.  They hate how every third person who comes into the salon is toting a Jennifer Aniston photo.  Yet I had to join the millions of Aniston hair fans when Chris McMillan chopped of her extensions into this lob (long bob) with textured ends.  The length, the sunny color, the imperfect part.  I love it!

The 2012 awards season is just days away.  Who will reign supreme this year?  I’ll be watching!  Images source: Getty Images.

My Holiday Beauty Wish List | NARS, Stila, Tarte, MAC, & Oribe

Every year I have a holiday beauty wish list that’s as long as the Dead Sea Scrolls.  Every cosmetics brand seems to come out with some kind of amazing sparkly palette.  Here are my top picks that I would personally love to have should Santa be feeling extra generous this year…

Stila, NARS, MAC, Tarte, Holiday collections 2011

1.  The best bang for your buck out of all the gazillions of holiday beauty offerings is the $25 holiday lip glaze set 2011 of 8 from Stila.  Just one lip glaze usually costs $22.  Plus all of these shades are very wearable, including my all time favorite color Starfruit.

2.  I’m pretty much dying over the entire NARS Modern Kabuki Holiday collection, but these brushes in the Naguta Kabuki brush set and their presentation are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.  I already ordered the flat, angular Ita Kabuki Brush and am obsessed with how it smoothes on foundation.  Now I want the whole collection!  C’mon Santa baby, it’s only $225:)

3.  I have loved Tarte cheek stains forever and was thrilled when they came out with lip stains that were gel-based.  The Lip Service Limited Edition LipSurgence collection would be a great addition to my kit!  Stained lips are so gorgeous and unlike many stains, these add moisture to the lips.  Minty fresh taste = holiday bonus!

4. It was love at first sight for me when I saw this gorgeous golden “makeup for your hair”, Oribe 24K Gold Pomade.  I mean, just look at it! The picture of luxe! I’d love to work little bits of it into my locks for a nice holiday luster.  $49

5.  The MAC Ice Parade exclusive Fabulously Festive Face Kit in Wintercool is one of the most wearable collections I’ve ever seen from them.  Several of the eyeshadow colors are matte (thank you!!!) so the sparkle can be well placed for maximum impact (mix those textures, folks!).  These are purples that literally look good on almost everyone and the rosy lip is also universally flattering.  You can never have too many of their brushes either! I’d like this for my own makeup bag. $59.50

6.  I want this for my kit!!! The NARS Danmari All About Cheeks Palette (exclusive to Sephora) has everything you need for a variety of faces and looks.  The top two blushes I use on brides (orgasm and sin) are included.  You can add a sheer pop of pink over the top of either or on its own with the bright pink desire and then use casino to bronze and contour and hungry heart to highlight.  Considering just one NARS blush is $27, this is a great deal for $65.

So Santa, I hope you appreciate how I’ve not only sent my letter to the North Pole, but have blogged it with specific links for your convenience.  Plus I’ve been so good this year!  Tee Hee.
